Yerbury, F.R. Display for the building industry. Art and Industry vol.44, no.262 (Apr.1948) pp.122-131 illus.
The author reports on changes in the technique of trade fair display as evidenced by the 'Building Exhibition' at Olympia in London in November 1947. "Remembering the pre-war standard and looking at that of today", he writes, "one realised what an enormous progress has been made in display and exhibition technique during the War period. A great fault of many exhibitions, particularly where the rather old-fashioned Teutonic or continental technique was employed, was that the designers apparently had no interest whatever in the objects which it was the intention of the exhibition to show, and seemed to attach more to their own cleverness than to the real interests of their employers...At the Building Exhibition it was pleasant to find a complete swing over from this attitude, and it could be seen that this was largely due to the fact that the best of the stands at the exhibition were designed by architects and not by advertising agencies". Among the display stands discussed and illustrated in the article are those for ICI, B. Finch & Co. Ltd., Ascot Gas Water Heaters Ltd., Celotex Ltd. and Williams & Williams designed by Arcon; the Aluminium Development Association, designed by Lynn Chadwick; the L.C.C. Brixton School of Building designed by Louis L. Lipski; Pilkington Brothers Ltd., designed by Kenneth Cheesman; Fibreglass Ltd., designed by Brian Peake and the Design Research Unit; De La Rue Gas Development Ltd., designed by Deryck Vesper; Runcolite, designed by Convel Designers Ltd. Rolf Hellberg and Gaby Schreiber; Crittall Manufacturing Co. Ltd., designed by Gordon McKnight; and the Council of Industrial Design, designed by Neville Ward. [17 illustrations]
