Klingender, F.D. The golden age of English caricature. Graphis vol.2, no.16 (1946) pp.468-479 illus.
Examines the so-called "Golden Age" of English caricature in the second half of the eighteenth century. The author attributes this to the rise of William Hogarth whose dramatic picture cycles, beginning with 'The harlot's Progress' of 1734, "raised social satire in the spheres of painting and engraving to the same high level which is attained in the writings of his contemporaries Swift and Fielding". As important was the adaptation of the Italian 'caricatura' method to the needs of political controversy. This resulted in the ridiculing of a person's physical appearance, often rendering them grotesquely distorted. The article is illustrated with examples of caricatures by William Austin, William Hogarth, James Gillray, Richard Newton, Captain Edward Topham, Robert Dighton, Henry Bunbury and James Sayers.
