Roy Sheldon of the US advertising agency Calkins & Holden reports on some of the latest developments in the styling of American products, with particular reference to packaging. Among products discussed and illustrated in the article are an Agfa-Ansco Redyser Traveller camera designed by Walter Geoghegan; a weighing machine designed by Joseph Sinel for the International Ticket Scales Corporation; a salmon can designed by Egmont Arens of Calkins & Holden for the Great Atlantic and Pacific Sea Co.; a quilt by designed Ann Wolverton for the National Sure-Fit Quilting Co.; a display mirror designed by James D. Herbert of Calkins & Holden for Richard Hudnut; displays of Swiss Kriss designed by Clarence P. Hornung for Modern Health Products; a display box designed by Walter Geoghegan of Calkins & Holden for Waterman & Co.; and a package designed by Carlo Leonetti for Woodbury's facial soap. Good design is your business. Everyday Art Quarterly no.4 (Summer 1947) pp.5-6, front cover illus. por.
A report on 'Good Design is Your Business', an exhibition of well-designed products held at the Albright Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, in 1947. Eleven products that featured in the exhibition are illustrated and discussed in the article. These include cooking utensils manufactured by Revere Copper and Brass inc.; an electric waffle iron, designed by George Scharfenberg and manufactured by Sunbeam Corp.; a magazine rack designed by Ewald Holtkamp for wood-Lines; dinnerware manufactured by the W.S. Pottery Company; a portable radio designed by Raymond Loewy Associates for Emerson Radio and Phonograph Corporation; coffee bags designed by Egmont Arens for the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company; a ventilation fan designed in-house and manufactured by the American Blower Corporation; a disposal unit designed by Sam Bloomfield for the Swallow Airplane Company; an egg container manufactured by Trout & Lewis; a pepper mill designed by Charles Cruze for George S. Thompson Corp.; and a decanter and glasses designed and manufactured by Pitt Petri. Also illustrated in the article are two room arrangements set up in the exhibition including a complete kitchen with steel units designed by Raymond Loewy Associates. [13 illustrations]
