Adams, Hervey Cadwallader [1903-1996. UK. Painter]

 

Hervey Cadwallader Adams was born in Kensington, London, England on 15 February 1903. He studied languages and singing in France and Spain from 1922 to 1926, before taking lessons in art with Bernard Adams (1878-1965) from 1928 to 1930. He subsequently worked as a freelance painter. A solo exhibition of his work was held at the Fine Art Society in London in 1934. He also exhibited at the Brook Street Art Gallery, Cooling Gallery, Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, and Royal Society of Portrait Painters in London; the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool; and at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. In 1931 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA). He taught at Berkhamsted School from 1937 to 1940 and at Tonbridge School from 1940 to 1963. During the 1930s he wrote numerous articles for The Artist magazine. He was married to the painter Iris Adams (1899-1984). He died in Horsley, Gloucestershire on 25 May 1996
