Addey, Joseph Poole [1852-1922. Ireland. Painter/Decorative Designer]

 

Joseph Pool Addey was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1852 and studied at the Royal Dublin School of Design from 1867 to 1869; Cork School of Art from 1869 to c.1872; and at the National Art Training School in South Kensington, London from 1872, He subsequently worked as a painter and decorative designer. In 1875 he was appointed the first Headmaster of Londonderry School of Art. He also taught at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art.

Addey was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin from 1877 to 1914. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy in London; and at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.

In c.1911 he moved to England and subsequently taught perspective at the Slade School of Art, University College London.

A hall decoration designed by Addey illustrated in Ornamental Interiors, Ancient & Modern by John Moyr Smith (1887 p,135).

Addey's address was given as 1 Clarendon Street, Londonderry in 1877 and 1878; 33 Shipquay Street, Londonderry in 1884 and 1887; Lake `cottage, Glendalough, Co. Wicklow, Ireland in 1888; 60 Frankfort Avenue, Rathgar, Ireland in 1889; 19 Westland Row, Dublin in 1890 and 1891; Green Park, Bray, Co. Wicklow, Ireland in 1892 and 1893; 1 Park Villas, Victoria Road, Cork in 1894 and 1896; 49 Oakley Road, Rankeigh, Dublin in 1898; Oakley Road, Rankeigh, Dublin in 1899; 10 Dunville Avenue, Rathmines, Dublin in 1900; Lichfield, Ballintemple, Cork in 1901; 6 Conquest Hill, Clontarf, Co. Dublin in 1902 and 1903; 17 Belgrave Road, Rathmines, Dublin in 1904; Glenbrook, Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin in 1905; Everton, Rathfarnham Road, Terenure, Ireland in 1906 and 1909; 16 York Road, Rathmines, Dublin in 1910; St. Andrews Road, Surbiton, Surrey, England in 1911; and 60 Cobham Road; Kingston-on-Thames, Surrey, England in 1914. He died in London on 18 October 1922
