Adams, Charles V. [-. UK. Cabinetmaker]

Charles V. Adams [commonly known as C.V. Adams] was one of the four initial members of the Guild and School of Handicraft [later known as Guild of Handicraft Ltd.] when it was founded by C.R. Ashbee at Toynbee Hall in London in 1888. He was a contributor to The Manual of the Guild and School of Handicraft published by the Guild in 1892 and was elected manager of the Guild that year.

Adams seems to have been overlooked by history and yet he was associated with the enterprise for some nine years and described by Crawford as "a mainstay of the Guild" [1]. "It was he who turned Ashbee’s schemes into real workshop organization" [2]. He even loaned money to the Guild in 1892. However, he subsequently resigned from the business in October 1897 "in an atmosphere of tension and some acrimony for a better paid and more responsible job at Heal’s" [3]
