Norman Adams was born in 1927, studying at the Harrow School of Art and then at the Royal College of Art. It was there that he was awarded the Bronze Medal. Then he began to teach in the 1950s in St Albans, becoming Head of Painting at Manchester College of Art from 1962-70. After taking other posts in Leeds and Newcastle, he was made Keeper of the Royal Academy in 1986, and the Professor of Painting Emeritus in 1995. His first solo exhibition was in 1952 in London, and he held them bi-annually after this. He was also commissioned various stage sets and costumes, as well as other projects, one for a mural in a Coventry comprehensive in 1954, and in 1967 Oxford University Press commissioned Adams to illustrate scenes from the Old Testament. He was elected as a member of the Royal Academy in 1972. A retrospective of Adams’ work was held at the Royal Academy in 1988. In 2002, a 75th birthday exhibition of his work was held in the Friends’ Room at the Royal Academy. Much of his work is held in public collections around Britain.
