Abramovitz, Albert [1879-1963. France/USA. Painter/Engraver]

 

Albert Abramovitz was born in Riga, Latvia, Russian Empire [now Republic of Latvia] on January 24, 1879. After attending the Art School in Odessa, he moved to Paris, France to study at the Grande Chaumiére. He subsequently remained in France and in 1911 became a member of the Salon d’Automne. He was also a frequent exhibitor at Les Independants. In 1911 he was awarded the Grande Prix a the Esposizione Internazionale in Turin in 1911.

He lived in London in c.1914-16. In 1916 he moved to the USA and the following year exhibited at the Penguin Gallery in New York. In 1927-29 he lived in Los Angeles, California. By the 1930s he had settled in Brooklyn, New York. where he lived for the next three decades. He died in East Meadow, Long Island, New York on 14 July 1963.

His work is included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; New York Public Library; and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
