Adamson, Lorna [1894-?. UK. Sculptor/Painter/Illustrator]

Lorna Adamson [also known as Lona Jackson] was born in Kilburn, London, England on 4 April 1894. She appears to have been a self-taught artist, although in the 1911 England and Wales census, Ada Adamson (who is assumed to have been her mother) gave as her occupation as Student (Sculptor) [1]

Lorna Adamson first exhibited at the Royal Academy in London at the age of sixteen. Between 1911 and 1921 she also exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool; Bristol Academy; and at Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. In addition to her work as a sculptor, she was also a painter and illustrated several children's books.

Some time between 1920 Lorna Adamson changed her surname to Jackson, although she continued to use the surname Adamson professionally [2].

Her address was given as 3 Harwood Mansions, London in 1911; Belgrave Road, St. John's Wood, London in 1915; 11 Holmdale Road, West Hampstead, London in 1921; and 42 Cannonbury Avenue, Harrow, Middlesex in 1939

She was active as an artist until at least the late 1940s. In the National Register of 1939 she gave as her occupation Commercial Artist [3]

____

[1] It is a possibility that as the column for Lorna Adamson is blank the occupation given for her mother should have been for Lorna as in that year she exhibited at the Royal Academy

[2] She used the name Lorna Adamson when illustrating the book Belindamay and her White Mice by Nancy Martin (London : Victory Press 1949).

[3] She gave her name as Lorna Jackson in the National Register.
