Akaki, Kampo [1831-1915. Japan. Painter]

 

Kampo Araki was born in Edo [now Tokyo], Japan in 1831 and from an early age as apprentice for the Araki workshop. He was eventually adopted into the Araki family in 1852 and eventually became their head painter.

He exhibited extensively in Japan. His work was also well received abroad and he gleaned awards at the International Expositions in Vienna (1873), Chicago (1893); Paris (1900); and St. Louis (1904). He was the first Japanese artist to be elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. He taught at the Imperial School of Arts in Tokyo (1898-1908), and at institutions elsewhere in Japan. He was a member of the Art Committee of the Imperial Household. He died in1915
