Aitken, Janet Macdonald [1873-1941. UK. Painter/Metalworker]

 

Janet Macdonald Aitken was born in Glasgow, Scotland on 9 October 1873 and was the daughter of Robert Thomson Aitken (1830-1895) a printer and lithographer. She studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1887 to 1901 and then at the Atelier Colarossi in Paris. After a sketching tour of Spain, she returned to Glasgow where she became part of circle of artists associated with Charles Rennie Mackintosh and subsequently became a leading proponent of the Glasgow Style.

She worked as a portrait, landscape and watercolour artist and was particularly known for her black and white illustrations in Glasgow which were reproduced as postcards. She was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts from 1893 to 1941. She also exhibited at Baillie Gallery, Royal Society of British Artists, and Society of Women Artists in London; Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool; the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colours in Edinburgh' and with the Aberdeen Arts Society. A solo exhibition of 40 of her watercolours of Majorca and Spain was held at the Beaux Arts Gallery in London in 1930

She was elected a member of the Glasgow Society of Lady Artists in c.1893; and the Women's Instructional Art Club. In addition to her work as an illustrator she also produced art metalwork and was a member of Scottish Guild of Handicraft.

In 1893-94 she drew illustrations for 'The Magazine' produced by Glasgow School of Art. In 1928 and 1937 she won the Lauder Award for her watercolours.

She died in Kilmarnock, Scotland on 2 October 1941. Her address at the time of her death was 3 Fullerton house, Troon, Ayrshire.
