Aitken, John Ernest [1881-1957. UK. Painter]

 

John Ernest Aitken was born in Liverpool, England in 1881 and was the son of James Aitken (1855-1935), an architect and painter. He trained as an artist with father and attended Manchester School of Art, Liverpool School of Art and Wallasey School of Art. He subsequently worked primarily as a painter of coastal scenes.

He travelled across Europe in 1913-14 painting numerous pictures of Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland and Italy. He also painted in Wales and Scotland.

He exhibited a Arlington Gallery, Fine Art Society, Royal Academy, and Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in London; Royal Cambrian Academy in Conwy, Wales; Walker art Gallery in Liverpool; Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; Royal Birmingham Society of Artists; Manchester City Art Gallery; and at the Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colours in Edinburgh.

He was President of the Liver Sketching Club in 1935 and like his father, he lived in Port St. Mary, Isle of Man for many years. Aitken died on 15 June 1957. His address at the time of his death was Gullane, Cronk Road, Port St. Mary, Rushen, Isle of Man.
