Aikman, William [1868-1959. UK. Stained Glass Designer]

 

William Aikman was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1868. After serving an apprenticeship with the Edinburgh stained glass firm Ballantine and Son (1890-92), he worked for James Powell & Sons and with J. Brown (1892-1913).

In 1913 Aikman set up his own studio at 7 Camden Square, London, where he remained until 1934 when he relocated to 26 Meadow Road, Sutton, Surrey.

After World War One Aiken taught at Camberwell School of Art in London. He was a founder member of the British Society of Master Glass Painters of which he was a Fellow. He was was also a member of the Art Workers’ Guild, which he joined in 1931.

Aikman died in Surrey in 1959.
