Abrahams, Dora [1909-. USA. Illustrator]

 

Dora Abrahams was born in Schenectady, New York in 1909. At school drawing was her weakest subject. After leaving school she worked as a cashier in a movie house where she began drawing on the back s of coin wrappers. After moving to New York City she studied under John Petrina at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn for two years. Petrina was so impressed by her that he purchased one of her works for his own private collection.

After leaving Pratt Abrams spent five months unsuccessfully looking for a job in New York City before going back to Schenectady. She subsequently returned to New York City in September 1935.

Abrahams contributed illustrations to ‘Vogue’, ‘Vanity Fair’, ‘The New Yorker’, ‘Country Life’ and ‘New Theatre’. She also drew advertisements for Bonwit Teller.

She exhibited at the New York Water Color Show and at Delphic Galleries in New York City.
