Abe, Eishiro [1902-1984. Japan. Papermaker]

 

Eishiro Abe was born in Japan in 1902. His family were papermakers, and he he was involved in the activity from an early age. At the age of 21 he entered the Shimane Prefecture Industrial laboratory and was subsequently to become one of the leading papermakers in Japan. Abe was the subject of three simultaneous solo exhibitions: at the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles, California (6-24 October 1976); Anneberg Gallery in San Francisco, California (5-30 October 1976); and at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts [now Museum of Arts and Design] in New York City (14 October 1976-2 January 1977).

Abe was the first paper maker to be designated as a national living treasure by the Japanese government. He died in 1984.
