Abraham, Carol [1949-. USA. Ceramist/Assemblage Artist]

 

Carol Jeanne Abraham [commonly known as Carol Abraham] was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1949 and studied at Tyler school of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia (1964-67); Boston Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts (1967-71); Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts (1967-71 B.S., 1971); and the School for American Craftsmen [now School for American Crafts], Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York (M.F.A. in ceramics, 1973). She has subsequently worked as a ceramist and assemblage artist

Abraham taught silk screening at Pilot School, a public school in Boston (1971), and has been instructor in ceramics at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York (1972-73); assistant professor of ceramics and sculpture, Southern Utah State College in Cedar City, Utah (1975-77); assistant professor of ceramics at El Camino College in Torrance, California (1980-81); assistant professor of ceramics at Ventura Community College in Ventura, California (1982-84); and design at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California (from 1989).

Abraham has exhibited at Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC (1975); Tweed Museum of Art in Duluth, Minnesota (1981); Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Pennsylvania (1981); and elsewhere. In 1984 she created a mural and sculpture for the Hotel Romerbad in Bad Salzuflen, Germany.

In 1977 Abraham was one of a group of 20 American artists who visited China. At the time this was unusual as the Chinese Government only allowed 1,000 non-diplomatic foreign visitors a year to enter the country.

Exampoles of Abraham’s work are in the permanent collections of the Museo della Ceramica in Bassano del Grappa, Italy; and Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York
