Agnew, Kenneth [-. USA. Industrial Designer/Architect]

Kenneth M. Agnew [commonly known as Kenneth Agnew] studied architecture at Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, followed by industrial design at the Royal College of Art in London (1959-61). He then joined the Research Unit at the RCA where he worked as an assistant to L. Bruce Archer (1922-2005) on a project that investigated how the design of hospital furniture and equipment could be improved. Agnew’s role in the redesign of the standard hospital bed is discussed in ‘Where rational design means research’ by Scott Kelly in ‘Industrial Design’ vol.13, no.3, March 1966 (pp.36-39). Agnew has subsequently been responsible for a number of products in the hospital field and has prepared about 40 research reports covering hospital equipment, the education of industrial designers, disaster shelters, solar energy products, and the carriage of nuclear fuels. He is the author of numerous articles on the design of furniture, specialised buildings, construction equipment, ships and aeroplanes. Between 1979-81 he designed and built an experimental solar house. Agnew left the RCA in 1978 to take up an appointment as Professor of Design in the Department in Industry, University of Ulster in Belfast. He retired in 1998. He was a Member of Society of Industrial Artists and Designers (MSIAD)
