Abend, Chester [-. USA. Industrial Designer]

 

Chester Joshua Abend [commonly known as Chester Abend or as Chester J. Abend] was born in Austria and moved to the USA at the age of four. Following high school in New York he worked for Norman Bell Geddes, and then studied architecture at Cooper Union in New York and industrial design at Stanford University in Stanford, California. After working at General Motors he opened his own design office in New York in 1954. In 1958-59 Abend was a Visiting Professor at the State Teachers College in Buffalo, New York, where he taught an industrial design course to prospective teachers. In 1960 he was appointed director of the Corporate Industrial Design Center (CIDC), the new industrial design department of Smith-Corona Marchant (SCM) in Syracuse, New York. His work at SCM is discussed in ‘The role of the corporate industrial designer at SCM’ in ‘Industrial Design’ vol.12, no.9, September 1965 (pp.116-117); and in ‘SCM’ by Douglas Manella in ‘Industrial Design’ vol.19, no.9, November 1972 (pp.36-37).
