Adamson, Gordon Sinclair [1904-1986. Canada. Architect]

 

Gordon Sinclair Adamson [also known as Gordon S. Adamson] was born in Orangeville, Ontario, Canada, on 19 May 1904. He studied architecture at the University of Toronto from which graduated with a B.Arch. in 1928. After working for Sproatt & Roll, Mathers & Haldenby, Edwin Kay Ltd., and Shell Oil Co., Adamson co-founded the architectural practice Adamson & Morgan with Earle C. Morgan in Toronto in 1934. The firm was renamed Gordon Adamson & Associates in 1946 and later also known as Adamson Associates. Notable architectural projects by Sinclair included several works in Toronto including the Holt Renfrew Building, the Peacock Contracting Company Office Building, the Exchange Building, the Bell Telephone Co. of Canada Building, the Peacock Contracting Company Office Building, the St. Clair Balfour Residence, the Canada and Dominion Sugar Company, and an apartment house at 130 Forest Hill Road. A photograph of the house in Toronto designed by Adamson for Dr. H. Halderson is illustrated in ‘Decorative Art’ 1941 (p.27); and a photograph of a studio in the house of Mr. Cleve Horne, designed by Adamson is illustrated in ‘Decorative Art’ 1950-51 (p.53). In addition to a number of high-profile projects in Canada, including the North York Municipal Building in Toronto (1974-78) and the Gulf Canada Square in Calgary (1977-79), Gordon Adamson & Associates were engaged on a number of significant projects in the USA, the UK and elsewhere, during the 1970s and 1980s, including, sometimes in collaboration with architect Cesar Pelli. They built the 50-storey Canary Wharf tower in London’s Docklands, designed by Pelli, and where responsible for designing the Docklands Light Railway Station. G.S. Sinclair was a member of the Association of Canadian Industrial Designers (ACAD) and a Member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (MRAIC). He was also onetime president of the Ontario Association of Architects in 1953. He died in 1986
