Adeney, Bernard [1878-1966. UK. Painter/Textile Designer/Muralist]
William Bernard Adeney [commonly known as Bernard Adeney] was born in London, England, on 2 August 1878. He studied art at the Royal Academy Schools in London (1892-96), the Académie Julian in Paris (1897), and at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London (1912). He subsequently worked as a painter, textile designer and muralist. In addition he taught at LCC Central School of Arts and Crafts in London from 1903 and was head of the School of Textiles at Central (1930-46). He also taught elsewhere in London including at Blackheath School of Art and Putney School of Art, and was a Governor at Hammersmith School of Arts, Crafts and Building. Adeney designed textiles for Liberty & Co., Allan Walton Textiles and other manufacturers. A photograph of a hand-printed fabric designed by him for Allan Walton Textiles is illustrated in ‘Decorative Art’ 1938 (p.140); and a furnishing fabric designed by him for Allan Walton is illustrated in ‘Decorative Art’ 1939 (p.118). Adeney painted murals for Borough Polytechnic in London (1911) and for Plumstead Library. He was a founder member of the London Group in 1913 and was its president in 1921-23. He participated in the Second Post-Impressionist Exhibition in London in 1912 and exhibited with the London Group over many years. His work was also shown at the Chenil Gallery, Cooling & Sons Gallery, the Grosvenor Gallery, the Royal Academy, the London Salon, the New English Art Club, and the Leicester Gallery in London; and at Manchester City Art Gallery. During World War One, Adeney was deployed as a camouflage artist in the Tank Corps. He also served as an official war artist. He was married to the painter and designer Noël Gifford [also known as Noël Gifford Adeney] (1890-1978). He lived for many years in London. Bernard Adeney died in 1966.
