Alber, Martha [1893-. Austria. Textile Designer]

 

Martha Alber was born in Rumburg, Bohemia [now Rumburk, Czech Republic] on 15 January 1893 and studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Prague, and under Oskar Strnad and Josef Hoffmann at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna (from 1908). She designed textiles and postcards with textile patterns for the Wiener Werkstätte. She also designed for Norbert Langer & Söhne. A photograph of a woven table cover designed by her and executed by Norbert Langer & Söhne is illustrated in ‘The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art’ 1913 (p.207).

Her work was shown at the Winter exhibition at the Museum für Kunst und Industrie in Vienna (1911-12); the Spring exhibition at the Museum für Kunst und Industrie in Vienna (1912); and in the fashion exhibition organised by the Wiener Modellgesellschaft at the Österreichisches Museum für Kunst und Industrie in Vienna (1915)
