Adam, Stephen Jnr. [1873-1960. UK. Stained Glass Designer]

Stephen Baillie Adam Jnr. [commonly known as Stephen Adam Jnr., Stephen Adam Jun., or Stephen Adam Jr.] was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1873. He was the son of Stephen Adam (1848-1910), co-founder with David Small (1846-1927) of the Glasgow-based stained glass studio Adam & Small (1870-85). After graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1896, Stephen Adam Jnr. began working with his father and between 1896-1904 they were in partnership as Stephen Adam & Co. In 1905, with Robert Paterson, he also co-founded ‘The Crafts’, a firm of interior of interior decorators and cabinetmakers in Glasgow. Adam withdrew from the enterprise within a year and from 1906 onwards Paterson ran the firm alone. Two drawings of stained-glass ingle panels designed and executed by Adam, Jnr. are illustrated in ‘The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art’ 1907 (p.139). Adam Jnr. designed stained glass windows for St. Columba’s Church in Strone, Scotland. Adam Jnr. exhibited at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts between 1907-11. Adam Jnr. later moved to New York and worked for the Tiffany Studio. He subsequently gave up stained glass work and died in 1960
