Adam, Yvon [1932-. Belgium. Painter/Engraver/Graphic Designer]

Yvon Adam was born in Grand-Halleux, Belgium, on 23 September 1923. In 1948 he entered the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Liège where he was taught by Fernand Steven, Jean Debattice, Paul Daxhelet, Robert Liard, Paul Nollet, Fernand Vetcour, Flory Roland, Charles Gilbert and Henri Brewer. After military service he established a design studio in Grivegnée with his wife, Louise Denoël in 1955. In 1961 he began teaching at the Institut de la Construction des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels (ICADI) in Liège. In 1972 he was selected to take part in a competition organised by the Banque Nationale de Belgique to design new Belgian banknotes, and was retained among the three finalists to take part in the realisation of the final notes. In 1974 Adam gave up teaching in order to concentrate on graphic design. In 1976 he enstalled an engraving workshop in his house in Grivegnée, however this was destroyed in a major fire in April 1976. In 1979 he completed the design of the 100 francs banknote for the Banque Nationale de Belgique. In the late 1980s Adam began designing with the aid an Apple Mac computer, but by 1992 he was tired of the ease with which work could be created using the new technology and returned to his brushes and pencils. Adam’s work is represented in a number of public and private collections in Belgium and abroad.
