Rose Adler was born in Paris, France on 23 September 1890 and studied under Andrée Langrand at the Ecole de l’Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs (UCAD) in Paris (1917-25), during which time she also took additional lessons in binding and gilding from Henri Noulhac at his atelier (1923-25).
While a student, examples of Adler’s bindings were exhibited at the Salon of the Société des Artistes Décorateurs (SAD) in Paris in 1923. These impressed the couturier Jacques Doucet (1853-1929) who purchased three examples of her work, and was to become one of her principal clients until his death six years later. As well as private collectors, Adler designed bindings for institutions and libraries including the Bibliothèque National and the Fondation Littéraire Jacques Doucet in Paris, New York Public Library and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Adler exhibited independently at the SAD (1924-29) and then at the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM). Her work was also shown at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925, the Exposition Internationale du Livre in Paris in 1931, the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne in Paris in 1937, the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco in 1939-40, the World’s Fair in New York in 1939-40, and elsewhere.
In addition to her work as a binder, Adler designed furniture (for Doucet and others), jewellery, clothing, and small decorative objects including picture frames and table-top accessories. She a founder member of the Société de la Relieure Originale in 1947 and participated in their exhibitions at the Bibliothèque National in 1947 and 1953, and in Lyon in 1949. In 1951 she appointed a Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur. Adler died in 1959
