Adam, Henri-Georges (Henri Georges) [1904-1967. France. Painter/Tapestry Designer/Engraver]

Henri-Georges Adam [sometimes known as Adam] was born in Paris, France, on 18 January 1904. His father was a goldsmith and jeweller. After initial art training with his father and at the Collège Lavoisier, the Ecole Germain-Pillon and at the Atelier de la Ville de Paris in Montparnasse, Adam entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He subsequently worked as a painter, sculptor, engraver and tapestry designer. In 1943 Adam received a commission from Jean-Paul Sartre to design the sets and costumes for his first play, ‘Les Mouches’, for which he created two 13 ft. (4 m.) statues. This lead to an enthusiam for making monumental sculptures, some of which were of epic proportions. Adam was one of the initiators of the salon de Mai in Paris. A major exhibition of his work was held at the Galerie Maeght in Paris in 1950. Adam died in La Clarté, Bretagne, France, on 27 August 1967.
