Acking, Carl-Axel [1910-2001. Sweden. Architect/Industrial/Furniture Designer]

 

Carl-Axel Acking was born in Sweden on 8 March 1910. He studied at Konstfackskolan in Stockholm (1930-34) and the Kungliga Teksniska Högskolan in Stockholm (1934-39) during which time he worked as an assistant to the architect Erik Gunnar Asplund (1885-1940) and participated in the VIth Triennale di Milano in 1936, the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne in Paris in 1937, and the New York World’s Fair of 1939-40. In 1939 Acking set up his own studio in Stockholm and subsequently worked as an independent architect and designer of interiors, furniture, wallpaper and lighting. He also taught at Konstfackskolan [now Konstfack] in Stockholm (1943-64) and at the Tekniska Högskolan in Lund (1965-76). His numerous architectural projects included Hässelby Hotel in Stockholm (1954-56) and buildings for the H55 exhibition in Hälsingborg in 1955. In 1949-50 he was responsible for the furnishing of Malmen Hotel in Stockholm. He also designed furnishing and interiors for ships of the North Star Line and the Swedish Embassy in Tokyo, and furniture for Svenska Möbelfabrikerna, Bodafors, Nordiska Kompaniet and the Kooperativa Förbundet. In 1944 Acking designed telephone booths for for the Swedish telecommunications concern Telegraph & Telereklam. In 1952 he was the first Swedish designer to be awarded the Lunning Prize/Lunningpriset. Acking died on 12 June 2001.
