Adamson, George Worsley [1913-2005. USA/UK. Illustrator/Cartoonist]

 

George Worsley Adamson was born in the Bronx, New York City, on 7 February 1913. His British-born parents had moved to the USA from Bombay [now Mumbai], India in 1910. Following the death of mother in 1921, Adamson went to stay with his aunt in Wigan, England. With the death father died in New York the following year, it was decided that he should remain in England. He studied at the Mining and Technical College in Wigan (until 1930), Wigan School of Art under L.T. Howells (1930-34), and (part-time) at Liverpool City School of Art under Geoffrey Wedgwood (1935-39). In 1939 Adamson submitted his first drawing to 'Punch'. He was to become a regular contributor to the magazine until 1992. His drawings and cartoons subsequently appeared in numerous national magazines and newspapers including 'The Daily Telegraph', 'Tatler', 'Illustrated London News', 'Time & Tide', 'The Countryman', 'Radio Times', 'Queen', 'British Airports World', 'Young Elizabethan', 'Private Eye', 'Nursing Times', 'Listener', 'Sketch', etc. In 1939 he taught art at a secondary school in Liverpool. Between 1940-46 he served in the RAF and in 1943 was appointed an official war artist. Following the war Adamson taught engraving and illustration at Exeter College of Art (1946-53). He then worked briefly with with the designer John Morgan for the London-based design group, Byrne and Woudhuysen Ltd., before becoming a freelance illustrator and cartoonist in 1954. From 1954 onwards, in addition to contributing drawings and cartoons to magazines, he illustrated some one hundred books, some of which he wrote himself. He also designed posters and greetings cards and worked on animated films. Adamson became a Member of the Society of Industrial Artists in 1954. He was also elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 1987 and was a Member of the British Cartoonists’ Association. Adamson died on 5 March 2005.
