A. Michelsen (Anton Michelsen) [1841-. Denmark. Metalsmiths/Silversmiths/Jewellery Manufacturer]

A. Michelsen [also known as Anton Michelsen] was founded by Anton Michelsen (1809-1877) in Copenhagen in 1841 and were for many years the royal court jewellers and the leading firm of gold and silversmiths in Denmark. Anton Michelsen was succeeded by his son Carl Michelsen (1853-1921) who changed the focus of the company more towards design. Niels Georg Henriksen (1855-1922) was brought in as the firm’s art director and the name of A. Michelsen began to establish an international reputation, partly as a result of the company’s participation in the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900 and other exhibitions. During its history A. Michelsen employed and commissioned work from many of the leading names in Danish design including Thorvald Bindesbøll, Georg Jensen, Arne Jacobsen, Edvard Kindt-Larsen, Ole Hagen, Georg Thylstrup, Mogens Ballin, Nanna Ditzel, Harold Slott-Møller, Kay Fisker, Kay Gottlob, Palle Svenson and Inger Hanmann. In the 1970s the firms of A. Michelsen and Georg Jensen merged and in 1985 they were subsumed with the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Factory and Kastrup Holmgård Glasswærks into the Royal Copenhagen group.
