Ajmone, Giuseppe [1923-. Italy. Painter/Lithographer]

 

Giuseppe Ajmone was born at Carpignano Sesia (Novara), Italy, on 17 February 1923. In 1941, he moved to Milan to study at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera where he attended courses given by Achille Funi and Carlo Carrà. He soon began exhibiting. He also wrote art criticism. In 1944, aged only 21, Ajmone joined the editorial staff of the newspaper ‘Numero’. He was also wrote for ‘Pittura’ (1946-48) and ‘Quaderni milanesi’ (1960-62). Ajmone exhibited widely in Italy and the USA between the 1940s and the 1960s including at the Venice Biennale in 1948, 1950, 1952, and 1958. Ajmone was a noted lithographer and illustrated poems by Cesare Pavese in 1947. Ajmone was awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1956 for his ‘Jungla’ rug.
