Edgar Ainsworth was born in 1905 and studied at the Royal College of Art in London, England. He subsequently worked as an etcher, poster designer and illustrator. His paintings were exhibited at Goupil Gallery, Manchester City Art Gallery, the New English Art Club and the Royal Academy. Ainsworth designed several posters for the Empire Marketing Board, at least one poster for the London & North Eastern Railway - ‘Whitby It’s Quicker by Rail’ (1933), and at least two posters for Shell. While art editor of ‘Picture Post’, Ainsworth commissioned Mervyn Peake to report on the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in a series of drawings.
