Abbott, Samuel Nelson [1874-1953. USA. Poster Designer/Illustrator]

 

Samuel Nelson Abbott was born in Mechanicsville, Iowa, USA [some sources state that he was born in Illinois], in 1874 and studied at the Académie Julian in Paris under Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens (1894-96). Abbott worked primarily as an editorial and advertising illustrator. His first professional assignment was the design of the cover and illustrations for the clothing manufacturer Hart, Schaffner & Marx. He continued to work for the company for the next 25 years. He also produced covers and illustrations for ‘The Saturday Evening Post’, ‘The Ladies’ Home Journal’ and ‘Collier’s’. He became a member of the Society of Illustrators in 1913. Abbott died in 1953.
