Albert Kahn Inc. [1902-. USA. Architectural Firm]

Albert Kahn Inc. [Albert Kahn Associates] was a founded in Detroit, Michiga in 1902 by the German-born architect Albert Kahn (1869-1942) who emigrated to the USA in 1880. The firm had its origins in a practice set up by George W. Nettleton, Alexander B. Trowbridge and Kahn in 1896. However, the partnership was dissolved in c.1900 following the departure of Trowbridge in 1897 and the death of Nettleton in 1900.

The firm, which is today known as Albert Kahn Associates Inc., specialised from its inception in industrial architecture, particularly for the Detroit automobile industry - between 1903-05 they designed nine factories for the Packard Motor Car Co. - and were pioneers in the use of reinforced concrete. In addition to their industrial commissions, they designed office buildings, including for General Motors in Detroit, residential projects, and a number of buildings for the University of Michigan. With Walter Dorwin Teague, Charles C. Colby, and Russell R. Kilburn, they also designed the Ford Exposition for the New York World's Fair in 1939-40.
