Aida, Yusuke [1931-. Japan. Ceramist/Muralist]

 

Yusuke Aida was born in Tokyo in 1931 and studied city planning at Chiba University in Tokyo from where he graduated in 1956. He subsequently trained as a ceramist with Ken Miyanohara. In 1961 he moved to the USA where he continued his studies. He also taught Boston Museum School of Fine Art and worked with David Gill at Bennington Pottery in Bennington, Vermont where he made a line of dinnerware in stoneware. Pieces from the collection where exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York, and in the New England pavilion at the New York World's Fair of 1964-65. Examples of these pieces are discussed and illustrated in 'Japan' in 'Industrial Design' vol.12, no.3, March 1965 (pp.32-33). In 1964 Aida returned to Japan where he began to specialise in architectural ceramics.

Among his projects were a mural for Ibargi Culture Center (1965); a mural for the lobby of Suginami Culture Center in Tokyo (1967); a mural for the lobby of the main office of Shokusan Sogo Bank in Yamagata (1968); murals for Inax Osaka (1969-70); murals for Keio Plaza Hotel in Tokyo (1970-71); a ceramic installation for Nagoya Kanko Hotel (1971-72); design of the plaza and a mural for Kaiun Kaikan in Tokyo (1972-73); the design of the plaza and a waterfall for the Mitsui Building (1974-75); exterior decoration for Hotel Okura (1977); design of the plaza for the main office of the Taisei Sougo Bank in Maebashi (1978-79); design of the plaza at Daiichi Kangyo Bank in Tokyo (1979-81); the 'City and Stream' monument on Kobe Port Island (1979-81); a mural for the Osaka branch of the Bank of Japan (1980); a mural for the loby of Osaka Institute of Technology (1980); a mural for the lobby of Yamagata Castle Hotel (1980-81); a mural for the lobby of Keio Plaza Hotel (1981-82); a mural for the lobby of Funabashi City Hall (1981-82); murals for the Yamanashi Culture Center (1982); mural for the lobby of Toyonaki Municipal Youth Center (1983); murals for Yamagata City Hall and Civic Center (1983); a mural for Shizouka Terminal Hotel (1983); a mural for Toyonaka Civic Center (1984); the Monument Plaza for Kose Sports Park (1985-86); a mural for lobby of the Shizuoka City Hall (1986); a mural for the lobby of Oguni District Hall (1986); a mural for the lobby of Communication Hall TAS (1987); a mural for the lobby of FANUC Product Development Laboratory (1989); a mural for Toyonaka Shonai Civic Hall (1989); a mural for the FANUC Guest House (1989); a mural and monument for FANUC Museum (1991); a monument for the Ikebukuro Terminal Building (1992); a mural for Takato Museum (1992); a mural for the lobby of Ebetu Ceramic Art Center (1993); a mural for the lobby of Hokkaido Municipal Museum of Literature (1994); a ceramic garden for Miri Ogai Memorial Museum (1995); a mural for the lobby of Fukuda-ya Building (1995); a mural for the lobby of Shirataka Town Hall (1997); a monument for the Hokkaido Sports Center (1998-99); a mural for the lobby of Oguni Town Hospital (1999); and a mural for Japan Railway's Skaueanbohigashine Station (1999).

Between 1965-74 was Director of the Japan Designers and Craftsman Association and in 1972-76 he was President of Japan Craft Design Association. In 1978 he was on the National Committee that organised the World Crafts Council Conference in Japan and acted as Chairman of the Crafts and Architecture programme. In 1979 Aida was guest speaker at the International Crafts Conference held at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. He was Chairman of the organising committee for the 'European Crafts Today' exhibition held in Japan in 1986. He was a member of the jury for the 1st and 2nd Mino International Ceramic Competitions held in 1986 and 1989. In 1991 he was Director of the Japan Association of Artists Craftsmen and Architects. In 1992 was appointed professor of art at Tohoku University of Art and Design in Aoba-ku, Sendai, Japan, and in 1998 was made President of the university. Among honours received by Aida was the 2nd Yoshida Isoya Memorial Prize.

Several solo exhibitions of his work have been held, and he has participated in numerous group exhibitions.
