Ahrends Burton & Koralek (ABK) [1961-. UK. Architectural Firm]

 

Ahrends Burton & Koralek [also known a ABK] was established in London, England by Peter Ahrends (1933-), Richard Burton (1933-), and Paul Koralek (1933-), who had met while students at the Architectural Association in London. They formed the practice after winning first price in a competition in 1960 to design to design the Berkeley Library for Trinity College, Dublin (1961-67). Other projects by the ABK partnership have included the Kasmin Gallery in Bond Street, London (1963); the design of exhibitions on Henry Moore at the New London Marlborough Gallery in London (1963); Bryan-Brown House in Thurleston, Devon (1964); an office building in Cheam, Surrey (1964); Chichester Theological College in Chichester, Sussex (1965); the South-West Area Development Plan for Basildon in Essex (1968); Eastfield County Prmary School in Thurmaston, Leicestershire (1968); St. Andrew's College in Booterstown, Dublin (1968-72); the Centre for Management Studies, phase I in Kennington, Oxford (1969); houses in Old Headington, Oxford (1969); the Public Library in Redcar, Yorkshire (1971); the Roman Catholic Chaplaincy in Oxford (1972), Nebenzahl House in Jerusalem (1972); the Public Library in Maidenhead, Berkshire (1972); extensions to Keble College, Oxford (1972-80); St Martin's Youth Centre in London (1973); Kimbell Construction workshop in Brickworth, Berkshire (1973); a shop/office/warehouse complex in Wallingford, Berkshire for Habitat (1974); the Centre for Management Studies, phase II in Kennington, Oxford (1974); housing in Basildon New Town, Essex (1975-80); the Library at Portsmouth Polytechnic (1975-80); the Arts Faculty Building at Trinity College, Dublin (1978); St. Mary's hospital and residence at Newport on the Isle of Wight (1982); a supermarket for J. Sainsbury in Canterbury, Kent (1982-84); Hooke Park College in Dorset (1983–90), the Dover Heritage Centre in Dover, Kent (1988–91); the Whitworth Art Gallery Development Plan and Sculpture Court in Manchester (1991–95); Docklands Light Railway Beckton Extension and Poplar Bridge in London (1987–93); Techniquest Science Discovery Centre in Cardiff, Wales (1992–95); Selly Oak Colleges Learning Resource Centre in Birmingham (1995–97); the W. H. Smith Headquarters Extension, in Swindon, Wilts. (1994–6); the Waterford Visitor Centre in Ireland (1997–98); the Dublin Dental Hospital (1995–98); Loughborough University Business School and Economics Building in Loughborough, Leicestershire. (1995–98); the British Embassy in Moscow (1993–2000); the Institute of Technology in Tralee, Co. Kerry, Ireland (1996–2001); Blanchardstown Institute of Technology in Dublin (1998–2002); County Council Offices in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Ireland (1999–2002); extension to the Arts Building of Trinity College, Dublin (2000–02); and John Wheatley College in Glasgow (2006). The ABK practice have won numerous awards from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for their work and in 1992 St. Mary's Hospital on Isle of Wight designed by them was named 'Best Building of the Year Award' by the 'Sunday Times'.
