Agano, Machiko [1953-. Japan. Fibre Artist]

Machiko Agano was born in Kobe, Japan in 1953 and has been active as a fibre artist since the 1970s.

Exhibitions in which Agano has participated include the 11th Biennale de la Tapisserie, held at the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts, Palais de Rumine in Lausanne, Switzerland (1983); the Perth International Crafts Triennial held at the Art Gallery of Western Australia in Perth, Western Australia (1989, 1998); 'Textural Space' at the Whitworth Art Gallery, University of Manchester in Manchester, England (2001); 'Through the Surface', an exhibition sponsored by Surrey Institute of Art and Design in Farnham, England that toured the UK and Japan (2004-05)

Agano's early works consisted of knitted monofilament webs, which would sometimes incorporate stainless steel wire or paper pulp to alter the way light reacted with the pieces when suspended from the floor, walls and ceiling. With her later work she photographed objects and had them printed on thin mirror finish resin sheet which is cut into ribbons to create spirals or organic-like sculptural forms.
