Aerni, Richard [1952-. USA. Ceramist]

 

Richard Aerni was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on 14 July 1952 and studied at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has work as an independent potter since 1979. Aerni has taught at Nazareth College in Rochester, New York (1988-89); the School of American Crafts, Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester (2003-04); and at Arrowmont School of Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

During the 1980s he collaborated with Michael Fracai. 'Aussie' (1984), a wheel-thrown, stoneware piece by Frasca and Aerni is illustrated in 'American Craft' vol.44, no.4, August/September 1984 (p.19).

Over 75 solo and group shows of Aerni's work have been held including at the American Craft Museum [now Museum of Arts and Design] in New York City; Renwick Gallery, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC; Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati, Ohio; Dayton Art Institute in Dayton, Ohio; and at Vermont State Craft Center at Frog Hollow in Middlebury, Vermont.

Examples of Aerni's work are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC; and the Crocker Museum in Sacramento, California.
