Abildgaard, Mark [1957-. USA. Glass Artist]

 

Mark Abilgaard was born in San Francisco, California in 1957 and studied at San Francisco State University State University in San Francisco, California (B.A., 1979); and the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, Hawaii (M.F.A., 1983). He has subsequently worked primarily as a studio glass artist. He has also lectured on glass and been an instructor, visiting artist, artist-in-residence.

Solo exhibitions of Abilgaard's work have been held at The Rachael Collection in Aspen, Colorado (1999); and at John Natsoulas Gallery in Davis, California (2002, 2005, 2008)

Group exhibitions in which he has participated include 'Artists of Hawaii' at Honolulu Academy of Arts in Honolulu, Hawaii (1981, 1983); 'Americans in Glass' at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin (1984); 'Craft Today: Poetry of the Physical' at the American Craft Museum [now Museum of Arts and Design] in New York City (1986-87, toured 1987-88); 'Taking Shape' at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Loretto, Pennsylvania (1988); 'American Glassmaking' at The Corning Museum on Glass in Corning, New York (1990); 'West Coast Glass: A Survey of Contemporary Glass Artists' at California Crafts Museum in San Francisco, California (1991); 'GLASS' at San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art in San Jose, California (1994); 'Light Interpretations' at The Jewish Museum in San Francisco, California (1995); 'Figurative Glass Sculpture' at The Miller Gallery in New York City 1999); 'The Figure' at Carolyn Blake Gallery in Charleston, South Carolina (2001); 'Figurative Work in Clay and Glass' at Gallery Alexander in La Jolla, California (2003); 'Figure it Out' at Morgan Contemporary Glass Gallery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (2005); and 'Cold + Hot' at Micaela Gallery in San Francisco, California (2008)

Examples of Abilgaard's work are in the permanent collections of Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York; Queen Emma Gallery in Honolulu, Hawaii; Fresno Museum of Art, Fresno, California; Virginia Museum of Fine Art in Richmond, Virginia; Wheaton Museum of American Glass in Millville, New Jersey; Contemporary Museum of Honolulu in Honolulu, Hawaii; and Hawaii State Foundation of Culture and the Arts in Honolulu, Hawaii
