Aalto, Aino (Marsio, Aino) [1894-1949. Finland. Glass Artist/Architect]

 

Aino Aalto [also known as Aino Marsio-Aalto and Aino Marsio] was born Aino Maroa Mandelin in Helsinki, Grand Duchy of Finland, Russian Empire, on 25 January 1894 and trained as an architect at the Teknillinen korkeakoulu [Institute, now University, of Technology] in Helsinki from 1913 to 1920. From 1923 she worked in the office of Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), whom she married in 1925. The pair subsequently often collaborated on architectural and design projects. In 1935 the Aaltos, together with the visual arts promoter Maire Gullichsen (1907-1990) and art historian Nils-Gustav Hahl (1904-1941), co-founded of the influential furniture company Artek. Aino Aalto was the firm's chief designer and later its managing director. She also designed glassware for the Finnish glassworks Iittala. She died in Helsinki, Finland on 13 January 1949.
